Welcome To CHEM 2B hybrid!!!
When you take one of my online classes, you get the same exact notes that I use in my face-to-face classes, links to excellent other websites, and the most attentive online instructor period! During the week and on most weekends your question will be answered no later than the next day and most of the time within 12 hours. I am planning to add audio files of me lecturing using the notes online for those who like the extra modality of hearing. I will also be offering real time interactive online office hours.
You may wish to check out your learning styles by taking a very short survey at www.vark-learn.com and you should score medium to high on the read/write style and the visual style to have a better chance at doing well in an online course.
Materials for the Class: (The text, the solutions manual, and other materials are available in the Science Learning Center.)
Required Text: General,
Organic, and Biological Chemistry, 5th
ed. McMurry and Castellion.
Publisher: Prentice-Hall
Recommended but not required – Study Guide and Full Solutions Manual to the text, ISBN 0131877747 The solutions manual is important to have!
Both are available at various online book sellers and the Shasta College bookstore. To get to the Shasta College Bookstore, from the Shasta College homepage find the Bookstore from the Quick Links drop down menu. Click on find your textbook and follow the menus until you get to Chemistry 2B. You do not need a transmitter.
You will also need a scientific calculator. Any kind will do. If you are buying a new one, a TI thirty something should be about $10 to $20. MAKE SURE IT DOES SCIENTIFIC NOTATION. There is one TI thirty something that says is a scientific calculator but it does not do scientific notation. Make sure it has a button that has EE on it or above it. I highly recommend that you avoid a TI89.
It is imperative that you log on to this course using the Shasta College online course program on August 16 in the morning! There will be lab on the evening of the 17th
To view most course documents you will need the free Acrobat Reader from Adobe. It is free. Get Acrobat Reader.
This an INTERNET hybrid course with the lecture and discussion online and an in-person lab on Tuesdays from 6-9PM.
Get this Syllabus
and READ this first!!! An internet course is more difficult for many students
because it depends solely on self discipline.
This lecture and discussion portion of this course will be delivered over the internet using a program called the Shasta College Online program. This delivery system allows students the freedom to set their own schedule for completing the coursework. You must be comfortable with working on computers and using the internet. If you are not, do not enroll in this course. Do not expect significant technical computer assistance from me or Shasta College. You also must expect to spend the same amount of time on this course to what you would have spent on the face to face version of this course. You should log onto this course everyday, check the course calendar, and make sure all of your work is up to date. You should expect to spend at least nine hours per week on this course. Furthermore you must have sufficient self-discipline to set and adhere to your own and to the course’s timelines. The internet version of this course is equal to or more rigorous than the face to face version. DO NOT FALL BEHIND!!
Learning styles: If your main learning style is audio/listening, an internet course is probably not for you unless you read the notes and text and record that on your mp3 player. Go to http://www.vark-learn.com to take a short learning style questionnaire to find you primary learning style(s).
When you enroll with Admissions, you are automatically put into the course on. Before you can enroll you have to register with Shasta College. To do this online go to http://www.cccapply.org/Applications/California_Community_College/apply/Shasta_College.html If you have problems contact admission at 530-242-7650. Once registered, you can then enroll online using My Shasta which is accessible from the Shasta College web page
I also have provided lots of notes and hyperlinks for the class and I am always adding more. These should be used in addition to the text.
